Bob Kaser was the original radio voice of the Blades, doing play-by-play for ten years. He also served as director of communications and broadcasting. He won the Bob Chase Broadcaster of the Year for 1993-1994 and 1997-1998. Prior to working for the Blades, Kaser worked for the IHL Flint Generals and Saginaw Gears, Eastern League Erie Blades, and WHL Seattle Thunderbirds. Kaser left the Blades in 2000 to take the broadcasting job for the Grand Rapids Griffins. He is currently the Vice President of Community Relations with the Grand Rapids Griffins and president of the Griffins Youth Foundation. He is part of the broadcast team that has ten times won the Broadcast Excellence Award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. During the 2016-2017 NHL season, Kaser did play by play for 13 Detroit Red Wings games on radio, and one telecast of a game on Fox Sports Detroit. This year, Kaser will be inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame.
Gregg DeVitto was the Kansas City Blades radio voice in their final year of existence. He did minor league hockey play-by-play, media relations, and sales in cities like KC, Cincinnati, and Hartford for nearly ten years. DeVitto currently resides in Michigan, where he is a sales executive for Federal Express.
Don Fortune served as color man for some Blades radio and TV broadcasts during the first six years. He started in KC media in 1963 with KMBC radio. He later was a TV sports anchor for 23 years, ten at channel 9 and thirteen at channel 5. He also provided play-by-play for the CHL Blues, MISL Comets, and preseason Chiefs games. Fortune is retired and lives in Florida.
Ken Hammond began his career in the broadcast booth in 1996. He was a former Blade, who racked up 193 NHL games. He retired from the Blades after playing in 109 games from 1994-1996. He served as color commentator for Kaser’s broadcasts. Hammond is now a global markets partner with Ernst & Young in Ohio.
Gary Emmons served as an assistant under Paul MacLean. He’d been director of player personnel and development the previous season, and had played for the Blades for six years, serving as team captain. He won the Turner Cup in 1992. He jumped into the broadcast booth for Blades games on the radio. Emmons is the varsity head coach for the Kansas City Jets in the Kansas City Youth Hockey Association.
Jeff Madill was a career minor leaguer and to many off his fans he was known as “Mad Dog”. He played for the Blades during the 1991-1992 Turner Cup season. He later played for Turner Cup winners in Atlanta and Denver. He returned to KC to finish up his career. At that point, Madill began his new career as a car salesman. He later hopped into the booth to help broadcast Blades games. Madill is a sales manager at Honda of Tiffany Springs.
Steve Garrett was the public address announcer for the Blades home games at Kemper Arena. He is a local Kansas Citian. Garrett ‘s “Ladies and gentlemen, Kaaaaaaaaaaansas City Goal!” call was a fan favorite. Garrett is a DJ at KCFX 101 The Fox, he is the station’s longest-running DJ.
