Doug Soetaert (7/5/1990-4/3/1991) 25-53-4, Did not qualify for playoffs
Soetaert was the only constant in Blades history. He served as head coach and director of hockey operations, then took the reigns as General Manager and Vice President. He served as associate coach during the 1995-1996 season. Soetaert is the President and Executive Director of the Kansas City Youth Hockey Association.
Kevin Constantine (7/11/1991-6/16/1993) 102-48-14, West Conference Champion, Turner Cup
Constantine was coach for two seasons. He was the most successful, bringing KC a Turner Cup in 1992 and runner up honors in 1993. San Jose rewarded him with the head coach title for the Sharks in the NHL. Constantine coached in the NHL for seven seasons. He coached the Sharks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and New Jersey Devils. He has a 161-155-61 NHL record. Constantine was head coach of the Wenatchee Wild until he was suspended indefinitely by the Western Hockey League.
Jim Wiley (8/19/1993-10/19/1995) 77-72-16, Eastern Conference Champion
Wiley’s first season was a winning one, but 40-31-10 and 90 points wasn’t enough to make the playoffs, the first time in league history a team with 90 points failed to make the post season. Wiley had been Constantine’s assistant the two previous seasons. He also played pro for the CHL Tulsa Oilers, AHL champ Hershey Bears, NHL Penguins and Vancouver Canucks. He also coached the Tulsa Oilers and served as General Manager of the USHL Des Moines Buccaneers. Jim Wiley passed away on December 26, 2021.
Vasily Tikhonov (10/10/1995-5/16/1996) 36-36-4
Tikohnov was the son of famed Russian Hockey coach Viktor Tikhonov. As well as coaching the Blades, Tikhonov coached in Finland. He worked with the Winnipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes franchise, as well as scouting and coaching for the Sharks. Vasily Tikhonov passed away August 7, 2013.
Don Jackson (6/19/1996-7/21/1997) 38-29-15
Prior to coming to KC Jackson coached three teams. He coached the IHL Cincinnati Cylones, ECHL Knoxville Cherokees, and CHL Wichita Thunder. Jackson was also an assistant for the Quebec Nordiques for three years. Jackson played for the North Stars, as well as the New York Rangers and Stanley Cup Champ Edmonton Oilers.
Paul MacLean (8/5/1997-8/2000) 121-97-28
MacLean brought back to back 40-plus win and 90-plus point seasons. As coach of the Peoria Rivermen from 1993-1996, he was the most successful IHL coach. For the 1993-1994 season, he was chosen as The Hockey News Minor Professional Coach of the Year. During the 1996-1997 season, he was an assistant for the Phoenix Coyotes. He played in the NHL for the Jets, Detroit Red Wings, and St. Louis Blues.
Stan Smyl (8/2000-4/2000) 37-42-3
Smyl was the final head coach. He’d previously coached the AHL Syracuse Crunch. Prior to that, Smyl was an assistant for the Canucks, the team he was drafted by in 1978. He played there from 1978-1991. He served as team captain from 1982-1990. His number 12 was raised to the rafters of the Canucks arena on November 3, 1991.

Ken Morrow (1990-1991 season)
Morrow was the first NHL player to win an Olympic Gold and Stanley Cup in the same year. He was part of the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980. He was part of the New York Islanders dynasty that won 4 consecutive Cups. he played 550 NHL games, recording 17 goals and 88 assists. He retired in 1989. He spent two seasons as a coach with the Blades, then went to assist Al Arbour with the Islanders. He was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995. Morrow is president of KCIce, an outdoor ice rink development company in Kansas City.

Assistant Coaches
Randy Pierce (1990-1991)
Randy Pierce was an assistant coach for the first season. He was the former manager of Bode Ice Arena in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was the executive director of St. Joe Minor Hockey Association. He played five seasons with the Colorado Rockies NHL team, one with the New Jersey Devils, and three with the Hartford Whalers.

Kevin Gordon (9/2/1993-6/1993)
Kevin Gordon currently coaches youth hockey in International Falls, Minnesota.
Mark Kaufman (8/31/1994-10/10/1995)
Kaufman was an assistant under Wiley. Prior to coming to the Blades, he was an assistant at Ferris State University. He also served as General Manager and head coach of the Rochester (MN) Mustangs of the US Junior League. Kaufman is an assistant coach for the Ferris State Bulldogs mens’ hockey team.
Drew Remenda (10/10/1995-2/26/1996)
Remenda was an Emmy winner for his work on San Jose Sharks broadcasts. He was an assistant coach from 1991-95 with the Sharks. He previously worked as the video coordinator for Hockey Canada, where he provided support for Canada’s National Team and Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. His hockey background includes a stint as assistant at the University of Calgary from 1988-1990 and having coached at the amateur level since 1983. Remenda is back with the San Jose Sharks as a broadcast analyst.

Lucien DeBlois (6/19/1996-8/1998)
DeBlois was an assistant under Don Jackson and Paul MacLean. He was General Manager and coach for the QMJHL Moncton Alpine. He served as a scout and assistant for the Quebec Nordiques. He also spent time as a broadcaster for ROS Sports, covering Montreal Canadiens and Nordiques games. Prior to coaching, DeBlois was a player for many NHL teams: New York Rangers, Colorado Rockies, Jets, Canadiens, Nordiques, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He won the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1986. DeBlois has served as a pro scout for the Anaheim Ducks and Vancouver Canucks, he is currently an independent scout.
Gary Emmons (8/21/1998-8/2000)
Emmons served as an assistant under Paul MacLean. He’d been the director of player personnel and development the previous season. He played for the Blades for six years, serving as team captain. Emmons is the head coach for the Kansas City Jets varsity team in the Kansas City Youth Hockey Association.
Barry Smith (8/2000-4/2001)
Smith served as assistant under Stan Smyl. He’d previously been the General Manager and head coach of USHL Waterloo (IA) Black Hawks. He was also assistant, and later head coach, of the ECHL Erie Panthers. Smith played pro hockey in Europe during the 1980’s. Smith is Director of Hockey for the Portland Junior Winterhawks.
