2000-2001 Season

A New Parent Team

20220102_064027[85]

After going a few seasons as an independent team, the Blades entered into a two-year agreement to be the minor-league affiliate of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. Canucks legend Stan Smyl served as the Blades head coach. The team failed to make the playoffs. And, on April 15, the Blades beat the Grand Rapids Griffins, 5-4. No one knew that would be the final Blades game. On June 4, the shocking news that the International Hockey League was ceasing operations was released. And with that, the Blades folded up shop. It would be eight years before the Kansas City area would get professional hockey back when the Central Hockey League came to Independence in the form of the Missouri Mavericks.
